Are you the sort of person that gets overwhelmed easily? Do you make mountains out of molehills?
This can be known as global thinking, and can be a big contributor to the pattern that we run called anxiety.
A global statement lacks details and can build up a problem into an unsolvable mountain. Or it may make an idea you have about the world universal.
An example of this are saying like…
All french people are great cooks or all men are after one thing.
Or working out is too hard or I can’t learn how to speak Italian, it is too hard.
These are global statements and of course can not be true for every french person or every man.
And also, learning a new skill is a process that needs to be broken down into its component parts and learned step by step.
When we lack distinction it can get us into trouble because we can’t define who to trust and who not to trust. It turns a learnable skill into an impossible task that gets put into the too hard basket. This causes procrastination and ultimately can lead to anxiety.
Everything we do now we once didn’t know how to do it. Everything is a process and everything has distinctions.
By learning to think less globally helps you achieve goals, have happier more fulfilling relationships and ultimately run less anxiety.
